The dream was always running ahead of me. To catch up, to live for a moment in unison with it, that was the miracle.
-Anais Nin-
No one can say it quite like Anais Nin. What she says, in fact, is what I believe life is in its purest moments and what art strives to be: A moment of divinity, peace, joy and sanctity. I believe that each child should know moments of absolute understanding like this with themselves and with the world around them. They should know that they are important and powerful individuals who deserve to be heard in whatever creative way they choose to express it: Painting, dancing, acting, music. This summer we will explore the art of the theatre in a way to help bring forth these moments along with building self-confidence and a bit of fun. . . Okay – a lot of fun. It is my goal to bestow on the wonderful children of TBCC, some of what I have learned, thus far, as an artist.
I first understood the true power of art when I was hospitalized with pneumonia as a child, where I met a young girl by the name of Yolanda who was suffering from stomach cancer. She was only 12 years old. She drew beautiful pictures of flowers that inspired everyone around her, including me. One day she came back from some tests and had awful news. . . I felt helpless. I didn’t know what to do, so I drew her a picture. She smiled for a brief moment. Her courage made me stronger. Her moment of divinity made me have a deeper understanding of life and the impact that art can have on people. This was the first time I understood how when we allow each other the freedom of expression, it can change the scope of our existence and others around us in a positive way. I believe that art can heal as well as entertain.
My name is Sarah Louise Wilson. I am a graduate of California Institute of the Arts with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. For the past ten years I have been working at an outreach program for children in east LA called Plaza De La Raza teaching theatre and art. In recent years, I have become a private theatre coach at Plaza De La Raza, preparing students for college auditions. Some of my pupils are now students at top universities around the US, including Stanford, NYC, and of course California Institute of the Arts. I have been asked to be the resident writer for 2011 at Plaza De La Raza, when the students will perform my adaptation of Pedro Calderon’s De La Barca’s Life is a Dream at Walt Disney’s Redcat theatre downtown LA.
In the past eleven years I have written numerous plays and have completed my first feature film entitled Jelly, now represented by Cinetic Media (Little Miss Sunshine and Napoleon Dynamite) which is due out this fall. I am very excited to be a part of the TBCC summer enrichment programs.
